Bishop Youth Council
The next meeting with the Bishop and the Youth Council is Thursday December 7. The Youth Council met last month to discuss the informal survey that they sent out in September. There was less than a 40% return of the survey from the parishes, which makes it difficult to interpret the data received into meaningful information. Could each parish check the list below and make sure that the contact person and information is correct? Please call or email me to update or correct any error on the contact list.I am deeply grateful to Annalora Calin-Campus Ministry at Presentation High School, and Terry Cotting-Mogan, Religion Coordinator at Holy Family Parish School, who have volunteered their time this past year in the development of this council. Thank you for your support!

My prayer is that you are having a happy Thanksgiving weekend with friends and family.I hope you will find something useful to use in this update.This just in!!! Basketball game between priests and seminarians--details below!!!

What is RENEW-Theology on Tap?

In the U.S. the theology on Tap program has become synonomous with ministry to young adults. Begun in Cicago in 1981, TOT provides a casual forum where young adults, ages 18-39, single and married, gather in parish halls or restaurants for "straight talk, hard facts, and real answers.

Dear Friends
Summer is over--school has begun--and parishes are kicking off their parish ministries this month! In this issue I want to focus on important information we need from you so that our Youth Council can begin their work; provide you with information about the Theology on Tap-Renew process for young adults; and the Youth Summit. So please read everything and contact me with any questions or concerns!--Sandy

YOUTH COUNCIL HAS BEGUN!!!

Yesterday, September 9, Bishop McGrath met with the Youth Council for the first time. These young people will be the voice of high school youth in the diocese regarding the state of youth ministry. Bishop gave them their first assignment, but in order for them to complete their assignment they will need your cooperation.Here is how it will work;1.Bishop assigns the council the information he needs about the youth in the parishes; 2.Youth Council members who have been assigned 3- 4 parishes each, send and collect the assignment from the parish contact person;3. The parish contact person gathers the information from the youth or parish staff, depending on the assignment and sends the data back to the Youth Council member which is due October 15;4. The youth council meets on October 24 to decipher and organize the information in preparation for their meeting with Bishop McGrath the following month on November 7.5. The Youth Council meets with Bishop with the re- ports and dialogue with him about the meaning of the information gathered and then will receive their next assignment.6. They will be contacting you this week and their email address will include "DSJ" through yahoo. Please keep watch for this email.WE NEED A CONTACT from EVERY PARISH. Please check here to see if your parish is listed. If not, then we need the parish to send a name and email info to Sandy Velasco Scott:scott@dsj.org. Please send us this info by Friday, Sept 15. If we don't receive a name-we will send the assignment to the Pastor. All communication regarding the assignment will be through email. Our youth council will schedule a visit with each of their assigned parishes during the year! Thank you for your cooperation!

Youth Summit

The (Arch) Dioceses of San Jose, San Francisco and Monterey will be sponsoring a Youth Summit as part of the Faith Formation Conference-November 10. The Youth Summit will be a dialogue with our Bishops and youth from the three dioceses. Those Youth Ministry Coordinators who attended Orientation Day on Sept 7, received hard copies of the cover letter, registration form and the parish resource packet. This is open to all high school youth who would like to attend. However, in order for any youth to attend, their youth ministry group must have processed the parish resource packet so that the young people coming will have the information we need for the Summit. There is only room for 40 participants from each diocese so we will accept registrations on a first come first served basis. For the cover letter, registration form and the parish resource packet please...

Greetings Youth Ministry Coordinators!!!
Well, it almost time to begin another year of ministry to the Young Church. I hope that you have been able to get some relaxing, winding down time. I have been sending out a lot of emails to you lately because there is a lot going on right now. This newsletter is specific to you as someone who leads and directs youth ministry in your parish. You will also receive all other updates from me so that you will be in the loop. I always welcome your comments, ideas, and suggestions!
Workshop on Teen Sexual Abuse

The Law Enforcement Perspective
The workshop this past Monday was very informative although difficult. It is hard to hear about the numbers of youth who are victims of domestic violence and/or sexual abuse. Leandra Pelaquin from the Rape Crisis Center gave us a very thorough overview of what actions we need to take as people who have been entrusted with the care of young people.This coming Monday, Aug 21, two detectives from the Sheriff's Department of Santa Clara County will give us a perspective of what they must do when a teen has been raped or abused. I encourage you to attend, and to bring those adult leaders who are members of your core teams. The last worshop in this series will be the following Monday August 28, 6:30-8:30 pm-Teen Issues, presented by Andi Grandy. Both workshops will be held at the Chancery, St. Joseph Conference Room, 3rd floor.

Youth Ministry Banners for The Day
I hope that as many of you and your young people will have an opportunity to come down and join in the fun. We were hoping that for the Mass the various parishes could make and bring a banner that represents their youth ministry. We would like to use these for the environment...

It will go on....
I know that I have been raising questions about Tahoe. Raising questions and asking for advice about the projects that come out of my office is essential. So I have gathered a task force who will help me address these questions. My purpose in doing so is to ensure that we can continue this experience in the present while working out potential obstacles that might inhibit it in the future. Tahoe 2007 is booked for the third week in June!!!!

Policies regarding Chaperones On and Off site
I am sending you a draft of the policy regarding chaperones, off and on-site, drivers, etc., for your feedback. This is based on conversations I have had with many of you. Once I hear back from you I will set this as the policy for the DSJ regarding chaperones on and off site activities.

On site (on parish grounds)
Minimum: 1 adult male and 1 adult female.
We would like to see a ratio of 1 adult to 10 youths as something to aim for. Good Youth Ministry implies that there are a good number of adults to help with all the dynamics and jobs required for a decent youth ministry night. One adult may never lead a YM group by him or herself without any other adult present. If it happens that no adults have come to help supervise, then the session is cancelled and the parents need to be called to pick up their children.

Off-site local retreats and activities:
1 adult to 8 youths
The number of girls to boys should be reflected as closely as possible to the number of women to men chaperones.
-Confirmation retreats
-other youth retreats
-day trips

Off-site retreats, conferences, outside the Bay Area:
1 adult to 6 youths
The number of girls to boys should be reflected as closely as possible to the number of women to men chaperones.
-NCYC (National Catholic Youth Conference will be in Columbus, Ohio in 2007-this ratio is set by the NFCYM and is non-negotiable),
-Tahoe Retreat, which is out of state
-LA Youth Day

Sleeping arrangements:
For overnight retreats or activities, adult men and women may not sleep in the same rooms as the youth. However in the case of a dorm style sleeping arrangements, two adults (never one adult) must stay in the same dorm as the youth. Adults and youth must be of the same gender in dorm sleeping arrangements.

Drivers: minimum age 21-preferably 25
No driver may drive alone with any one youth.
No adult may never be alone with a youth out of sight of other adults
All licenses and insurance info must be on file at the parish or entity sponsoring the retreat.

All chaperones, drivers, adults who work in ministry to youth must have fingerprint clearance before they are allowed to work with the youth.

NCYC—National Catholic Youth Conference
Nov 8-10 2007, Columbus, Ohio- and it is not
too early to start planning.
I would like a committee to help me plan this trip. If you are interested in serving on this committee, please email me at scott@dsj.org.
Let’s bring a delegation from the DSJ—it is an awesome event!!!
Click here à: http://www.nfcym.org/ncyc/index.htm for more info!

Safe Environment Training for all YMC’s
Aug 14, Aug 21, Aug 28, 6:30-8:30 pm
This training series will help you train your young people about appropriate and inappropriate behaviors and teach them that they have a voice—they have dignity!
This is especially important information for all new adult YM Leaders, volunteers or staff.

Youth Summit
We will be sending you a process for the Youth Summit that will take place on November 10.
We are asking that you do this process at one of your Youth Ministry gatherings so that we can have the information from the parishes for the Youth Summit. The themes of the summit are Vocation; Leadership, and Parish Partnership.
We are also asking that one youth rep from each parish participates in the forum. You can decide who to send and how you will choose this young person. We do ask that this youth is articulate and exhibits some leadership skills.
I apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause you in your programming. Our intent is to gather information from you and your youth that will help all of us work toward a partnership of handing on our faith to young people in concrete and intentional ways.

Update July 7, 2006

Hello Colleagues in Christ!
I hope you are all getting a chance to rest up this summer.

Tahoe Update
We all made it back safe and sound from our Tahoe Trip. It was awesome and a great success.
This retreat has been building, growing, evolving for eleven years. As with all things of value—it is time to evaluate this experience with an eye to its longevity and as a model of best practice for youth ministry. This evaluation is to support this experience for the long term.
I am putting together a task force of YMC’s, priests who have been involved in Tahoe over the years, and YA’s who have worked on this retreat and experienced it as teens, to evaluate this experience in light of the Pastoral Plan and the vision of the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries.
This is the plan:
Ø To bring it closer to home so that our parish leaders, pastors, parents, can see what this experience is about for the youth who participate, and the young adults who are coordinating and directing it;
Ø To address the issue of justice: Is it ok to spend $10,000 alone on transportation?
Ø To ensure that leadership development is an objective by incorporating leadership workshops into the workshop schedule, so that the issue of leadership is clearly addressed;
Ø To keep it intact and to continue with the format as it has been evolving by the directors and committees who work so hard each year to make it happen.

I hope that you will support this undertaking—the Spirit will be present wherever we gather. I am convinced that this retreat can be a catalyst in igniting youth, youth ministry, and parishes together in service to the Young Church
I hope to have the work of this task force completed by September so that we can begin the work for 2007.

New Interim Director for SJSU catholic Campus Ministry
Kay Polintan who has been the YA Youth ministry person for five years is now the interim director for SJSU Catholic Campus Ministry. The community at SJS has been developing small Christian communities through Renew international which is closely linked with the TOT-RI Young Adult Ministry. Kay is excited that the ministry at SJS has grown this past year! Kay also serves on the YA Leadership Group and YM Advisory Board. She has been a wonderful teacher to me about campus ministry and has been a great asset to our boards.

Theology on Tap and Renew International

We have contracted with TOT-RI to begin this ministry here in the DSJ
We have hired a young adult, Darlene Tenes, to coordinate market and publicize this to YA’s and parishes in the DSJ community. She is a marketing specialist and will be a great asset in igniting this ministry. We will be holding meetings with the People from TOT-RI for all those interested –soon! They will be conducting informational meetings for pastors, parishes and young adults who wish to host this event in their communities. More info coming soon!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
We have a DSJ YA Leadership Group. This group came together for the first time in May and will be meeting again on July 20 to set some visioning and planning for YAM 2006-2007. One of the agenda items is communication via a website and possibly forum times with different church-community leaders.
YAM is growing here in the DSJ----we have a fairly new core team from Deanery 2---who meet monthly at St. Athanasius, and a growing YA group at St. Julie.

If you would like to attend or if you are a pastor and would like to send someone—please RSVP me as soon as you can so that I will have enough supplies on hand.
For new and almost new YMC’s. The purpose of the orientation is to provide the following:
A history and overview of Catholic Youth Ministry in the United States;
Tools for visioning, strategic planning and how to make this manageable;
Understanding of catechesis as the heart of this ministry and how we need to do this in ways that are new, out-of-the-box, and which incorporate the
multi-dimensional lives of our youth;
Resources and experts in the field that are at your fingertips;
Information about what we are doing for YA ministry this year
Information regarding the National Conference for Catholic Youth Ministry Leaders coming up in Nov-30 Dec 2, 2006.
(I hope you will be provided with some financial support to attend this conference which will nourish you in your ministry and connect you to thousands of others who share this work with you);
The Vision of the DSJOYYAM in light of the Pastoral Plan of the DSJ: Renewing the Church;
The building of a network and support among and with yourselves in this ministry so that you always know that you are NOT alone;
Last but never least--your needs, concerns, suggestions, ideas, vision...

Youth Council-YouthLeader
Nine of our youth council members will be attending YouthLeader Training in Lafayette this coming week. The remaining nine will attend the YouthLeader training the week of July 24. They will be commissioned Sept 16, 5 pm at Mass with Bishop McGrath- St. Julie Parish. Keep them in your prayers.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I will be out of the office the week of July 10-15, on an Immersion Trip with St. Julie Parishioners to Tijuana. I speak about justice, I write about it and it is a big part of the vision from the DSJOYYAM. This is one way I will DO some justice in community with this group of people who are giving of their Time, Talent, and Treasure (and homey comforts) to work for others who have nothing. I am happy to be taking one of my sons with me. I have been traveling a lot this past year and it is difficult for me-- for all mothers, to be away from their children—even if they are bigger then me!!!!
Keep us in your prayers!
Blessings!

The transportation expenses jumped from $6500 in 2005 to $9500 in 2006 and all of our expenses are quickly outgrowing our revenue.
We cannot continue to raise the price of this retreat without compromising a priority of this office which is justice and opportunity for every young person in this diocese. We are already at a point where we are pricing out many young people who would like to come but who cannot afford it.
This coming year we will be working on ways to continue the experience in light of these difficulties and in concert with the Pastoral Plan, and that might mean change: of location, of the retreat’s length, of its size; of the frequency it can be offered, and of its purpose. Indeed there has never been a vision of the retreat from its inception that I know of, and vision is vital to its longevity. It may be that we need a year off to plan for the future especially if we change its location. Your feedback is crucial to us as we begin the evaluation process. I will send a survey to you in the next month. In the meantime
keep us in your prayers as we travel once again to Tahoe this next week. We leave Monday June 19 and return Friday June 23.

Blessings!

The New Diocesan Director’s Institute was very helpful to the 23 of us from around the country who attended in Wash D.C. June 1-4:
Some thoughts:
The importance of parents in ministry to young people-click here for some resources involving parents in ministry;
Maps are BIG-without them we lose our way and the vision become muddled;
Also--Your Professional Youth Ministry Directors hired to coordinate and direct sustainable ministry to the Young Church should have or be on their way to having these Five Core Competency Standards. Working in ministry and young people requires, competency, professionalism, maturity.
1. Core Certification Standard 1- Personal and Spiritual Maturity: A lay ecclesial minister demonstrates personal and spiritual maturity with the people of God.
2. Core Certification Standard 2- Lay Ecclesial Ministry identity: A lay ecclesial minister identifies the call to formal and public ministry as a vocation rooted in baptism.
3. Core Certification Standard 3- Roman Catholic Theology: A lay ecclesial minister integrates knowledge of the Roman Catholic faith within ministry
4. Core Certification Standard 4- Pastoral Praxis: A lay ecclesial minister engages in pastoral activity that promotes evangelization, faith formation, community, and pastoral care with sensitivity to diverse situations.
5. Core Certification Standard 5- Professional Practice: A lay ecclesial minister provides effective leadership, administration, and service, in the spirit of collaboration and ( a word I like these days) partnerships

If you do not have a youth minister coordinator and can’t afford to hire one, call me and I can work with you and your staff. In other words-there are no excuses for not providing ministry to young people because “the Young Church deserves the very best we have to offer.”

May 2, 2006 Update

Hello Fathers,

Youth Council Update
Thank you for your support regarding the development of the Bishop’s Youth Council. Every young person who has applied appears to be outstanding.
We hope to have the Youth Council discerned this month.

New YMC’s need to go to this!!!
Congratulations to those parishes who have recently hired new Youth Ministry Coordinators to their staffs, or who have assigned newly ordained priests to develop this ministry in the parish. It is imperative that these lay ecclesial ministers and priests have the skills and training to be successful. The best training in the country is the National Certificate Program and I hope to see those entrusted with leading this ministry register for this training. Click Here for the 2006-2007 Course Cycle Dates and Locations.
Please let me know as soon as possible if you are planning to send your Youth Ministry Coordinator and other ministers to this training. The Diocese of San Jose is a member of the Nor-Cal Youth Ministry Diocesan Directors group which sponsors this training, and we are in the final planning stages for the coming year.

New Directions in Youth Ministry for Middle School, Junior High and Parish Schools!
On the horizon for youth ministry, is the understanding that middle school and junior high school youth need a more interactive, youth engaging faith formation experience which includes youth in the parish catholic school. I am excited to see several of our parishes moving in this direction and I am certain that this will be “par for the course” in the coming years.

YAM, TOT, RI, SCC
I will de-code this for you in the coming weeks. First person to decode this before then will win a FREE book: “Soul Searching: The Religious and Spiritual Lives of American Teenagers” by Christian Smith with Melinda Lundquist Denton ($25.00 value). I dare you to try!!!!!!

Blessings,
Sandy

March News

Hello Everyone!
Happy Lent--I hope you are doing WELL!

Revision of Pastoral Plan
I have just finished revising the YA section of the Pastoral Plan with YA leaders in the DSJ. As you know YM and YA strategies and actions were identical when this plan was first promulgated. I worked with YA leaders for their feedback, additions, deletions. The revised YA piece has been approved and is being translated into Spanish and Vietnamese.
Now it is YM's turn. I ask that you review the current YM plan and give me whatever feedback, including additions, deletions, that you would like to see. I ask that you send me your edits by Friday March 21.
If you would like to meet with me to chat about this-that would be fine- just email me.
I hope this way of doing this would be more helpful than scheduling an extra meeting.
Part II--please know that all Young ADult wording will automatically bee deleted from this.
YMC quarterly meeting
Tuesday March 14 is our next quarterly meeting--5 pm in the St Joseph room here--potluck!
In have a lot of info to report and share with you from the NFCYM meeting I attended in Portland in Jan. I hope you will make an effort to attend this meeting--lot of things happening in YM-land.
If you would like something placed on the agenda please let me know by this Friday Mar 10.

YMC retreat
Please send me your reg forms and fee fo the YMC retreat happening on March 17--Friday. Since i have been in this position, many of you have expressed your need and your support for a YMC retreat geared to those who work with young people. I have not had a great response and worry that if this is not well attended, than it will be difficult for me to advoacate for such things in the future. Just something to consider. If there si a problem with not being able to get away from the office or $, please let me know and I can speak to your pastor about that. I hope to see more registrations coming in this week.

New Online community for young adults---for your info
have not launched this yet, but will in a few days---
I welcome feedback from those of you who are YA's!!!

The groups of teens who participated in the Justice Immersion Experience through St. Julie Billiart Parish. They did much to “bridge the gap” between the parishes of St. Julie in San Jose and San Enrique in Tijuana!

DSJ Youth and Young Adult Day—Bridging the Gap

This year’s celebration of Youth and Young Adult Day “Bridging the Gap” will be Saturday, September 16 at St. Julie Billiart Parish, noon-11:30pm. Exodus from Mitty High School, John Grassadonia and Chrism, Lytehouse, Alex Vo with Seraphic Devotion, Angela Aranha are just a few of the bands who will be playing throughout the Day. Cultural performances will be featured and a variety of ethnic cuisines will be available for sale. Game and vendor booths will be set up throughout the parish grounds.
This year we have included workshops on Youth Leadership, Vocation, and The Justice Immersion Experience. The Immersion Experience workshop will include stories from young people who participated in these various experiences this summer. They did a lot to bridge the gap in Tijuana, Arizona, New Orleans, and San Francisco. We will offer templates to interested youth ministry groups, young adults, and parishes who would like to provide these kinds of immersion experiences for their young people and their community.
It is particularly significant that as we celebrate this day in the 25th jubilee year of the Diocese of San Jose, “Rooted in Faith-Embracing the Future”, eighteen young people will be commissioned to serve on the Bishop’s Youth Council at the 5 pm Mass with Bishop McGrath. These young people were not born 25 years ago, but they will be called on to represent their peers in order to “Bridge the Gap” between the present and the future. They will work in partnership with Bishop McGrath and parishes toward the realization of authentic and dynamic ministry with, for and by the Young Church.

ARE YOU A GOOD SPEAKER???
The Diocese of San Jose’s Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries is putting together a Speaker’s Bureau!
We are convinced that there are many speakers in our parishes, among our parish staffs and parishioners who have never been asked to be a speaker.
We are asking YOU!!!!
Speakers are needed for youth, young adults, adults and children. Are you interested?
Please send us the following info and let us know what age groups(s) that interest you and what topics you speak on. Some of these speaker opportunities come with a stipend and some do not.
I am looking forward to hearing from YOU!!!!
· An attractive one-sheet containing a mini bio, photo, client quotes, your preferred audience and your most requested topics, etc.
· A demo of a live presentation (Optional)
· Recent references from clients, groups, etc.
· Any samples of books, articles, etc. that you have authored
Blessings

Hello!Many of you have started back to school so I wish you a great year with your young people. I do hope you have a great last mini vacation this Labor Day Weekend. I look forward to seeing Youth Ministry Coordinators and Directors of Catechtical Ministry next Thursday Sept 7 on Orientation Day with Bishop PJ!
News

September

At the end of the month I will be attending our Region 11 meeting in Las Vegas. I always look forward to these meetings with my colleagues in our neighboring dioceses. This year our focus will be on Competencies for Diocesan Directors and the National Adult Conference in Las Vegas-And the Desert Shall Bloom, Nov 30 -Dec 3; I hope many of you in youth ministry have the opportunity to attend. It is good to gather periodically with colleagues in ministry, to pray together, learn together, and celebrate together. It is our hope that what happens at this conference in Vegas this year, will NOT stay in Vegas!
I hope you have a chance to check out my new website. It is all over this newsletter and on the emails I send out, but here is the address anyway: http://sitekreator.com/dsjtyc/ Check it out and send me your suggestions about what info you would like to see and how I can make it easier for you to navigate.

Commitment to this Experience for DSJ Youth
The Tahoe Task Force met on Thursday Aug 24 to discuss the Tahoe Youth Experience-its values, its challenges, and ways to ensure its longevity for the long term. It was a great conversation in which everyone had an opportunity to voice their concerns and their hopes for this cherished event. I will be putting together a board to work with me regarding these challenges. If you are interested in serving on this board, please drop me an mail. I would be happy to hear form you.
Read on for a look at the meeting notes...
Youth Ministry Training

For Volunteers and Interested Parishioners!
We won't have training to offer your adult volunteers until January 2007. For Youth Ministry Coordinators The National Certificate Program sponsored by the Northern California Diocesan Directors will not be offered for the 2006-2007 year. Both of these trainings are on hold due to the lack of numbers for the 2005-2006 year. Hopefully we will offer the National Certificate Program for 2007-2008 with a friendlier schedule and timeframe.
The training that was formerly connected to ILM- will be enhanced for January 2007. I would like to offer a different schedule and training that is interactive, rich in content, and that provides the trainees an opportunity to practice their skills during the sessions. This is currently in development and I will send you details as soon as they are completed.

Services

For Your Use
I am beginning my fourth year in as the Associate for Youth and Young Adult Ministries for the Diocese of San Jose, Sept 2, to be exact. It is unbelievable- and I am still excited to be here!!! I have met so many of you these past three years and you have welcomed and supported me into this role--Muchas Gracias! I have added a page to the website, "About Us", that gives an overview of the services available through my office. My work here is grounded in building an infrastructure to support these ministries for the future. There is much to be done, but I am enjoying this creative challenge.
